Question by prettyandblonde_33: i need sugar glider information about hand raised joeys, they are now 5 months old?
I found these joeys in the bottom of the cage 5 months ago, the mother dead. I have tryed to take the best care possible of them, but i feel the male is still to small, he only weighs and ounce, while his sister is 2 1/2 ounces. Any help would be appreciated.

I am not sure what all you can do to make him gain weight. Make sure you are feeding them lots of calcium. You may want to try plain yogert to see if they will eat that, it may help with weight gain. Try calling a wildlife agent in your area and see if they can give you any tips or maybe a vet that deals with exotic animals. You are doing good though, I’ll see if I can find any more information for you.

What diet are you currently feeding them? How old were they when the mother passed? These questions will help decide what action needs to be taken.

I am currently handraising a rejected joey (only 2.5 weeks old) and the research I’ve done says that joeys that are not weaned by mom tend to be a bit smaller, but eventually catch up in size to their siblings. It could also be that he is just a small guy, as gliders come in many sizes.

I would say do two things before you try and help him gain weight: visit http://www.sugarglider.net and post this question – there are dozens of people there that have likely had the same or similar issue, and may have better ways to resolve it. Secondly, a vet visit would rule out any parasites keeping him from gaining weight, or any other medical issues.

Oh! I almost forgot, there is a diet out there called Darcy’s diet for sugar gliders, it was created for underweight gliders. But before commiting to it, discuss it on the forum I gave or a vet first. :)

I hope this was helpful, good luck on your kids!!
